▶ Objectives
– FANE-MATH-PE aims to develop applied mathematical tools for critical global challenges (including prevention and control of epidemics and cancers). Not intended to stop after 4 years, it seeks to build a sustainable, diverse network of researchers from France, Africa and beyond, uniting young talents and seasoned experts, men and women alike, in applied mathematics.
– FANE-MATH-PE has strong interdisciplinary dimension. It brings together experts in applied mathematics, physics, biology, biotechnology and involving mostly French and African institutions.
– A core research objective is to propose new mathematical, numerical, statistical, AI models and algorithms that combine precision, adaptability, and optimized computation times. The project’s themes (mathematics and its application to health, epidemiology, biology, environment, and ecology) align closely with the research priorities of the two Pls labs.
The project is organized into two main work packages (WPs):
◉ WP1: Understanding Multiple Epidemics Waves
This work package aims to identify and classify generic mathematical models that can exhibit waves:
– Determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for the occurrence of multiple waves;
– Investigate strategies to mitigate the impact of waves on epidemic size.
◉ WP2: Advancing Cancer Treatments
This work package aims to:
– Develop AI/ML strategies to predict and prevent AML relapse by conducting unbiased ex vivo drug screens of standard and targeted therapies on primary patient AML cells.
– Statistical/Machine learning cancer cell identification: Explore new ways to classify single cancer cells by mechanical characterization.
▶ Team - Collaboration
– France PI: Sophie Dabo-Niang (Prof. of Applied Mathematics, University of Lille). : representation of time and space in random environments using stochastic space and time changes driven by real problems in various areas.
– Africa PI: Patrick Tchepmo Djomegni (Associate Prof. in Applied Mathematics, North-West University, South Africa). Research: PDEs Dynamics; Modeling and understanding band behaviors, pattern formation, spatial spread of diseases across multiple patches, tumor growth, and metastatic processes. Co-organized 3MC scientific events (in SA, UK, CA, ET); secured funding in the program Quantum Leap Africa of AIMS centers.
